Trust Wallet Chrome Extension Update Triggers Widespread Reports of Immediate Fund Losses

  • Wallet funds drained within minutes after users updated and accessed the Chrome extension version 2.68.
  • Blockchain data shows coordinated transfers across many wallets during a short period after the update.
  • Trust Wallet confirmed the issue was limited to the browser extension and mobile users were not affected.

Trust Wallet users reported sudden fund losses following a Chrome extension update released on December 24. Reports emerged shortly after version 2.68 became available. Users across several blockchains noticed balances dropping immediately after importing seed phrases.

According to ZachXBT, multiple Trust Wallet users reported unauthorized fund outflows from their wallet addresses within the past few hours. The root cause has not yet been confirmed, but the incidents occurred after Trust Wallet’s Chrome extension released an update yesterday.…

Consequently, attention centered on the browser extension rather than mobile applications. Activity appeared concentrated within hours of the update rollout. The timing raised concerns among users monitoring wallet security.

Early complaints focused on missing Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, and Solana holdings. Funds moved out without staged withdrawals. Transfers emptied wallets in single transactions. As a result, users suspected automated draining behavior.

Social posts documented similar timelines across unrelated accounts. These patterns suggested a shared technical trigger. This was after Revolut and Trust Wallet launched a partnership enabling European users to buy cryptocurrencies directly into self-custody wallets.

On Chain Data Shows Coordinated Draining Activity

Blockchain investigator ZachXBT reviewed transaction records tied to affected wallets. The data showed rapid outbound transfers shortly after wallet access. Moreover, the transactions followed nearly identical structures. Funds moved through several intermediary wallets. This routing pattern repeated across many cases.

Several receiving addresses collected assets from multiple victims. Public records linked the addresses to the reported incidents. The activity occurred within narrow time windows. Therefore, analysts viewed the movement as coordinated. On chain estimates indicated losses exceeding $4.3 million initially. Later tracking suggested totals rising beyond $6 million. These figures relied only on visible blockchain transfers.

Multiple Networks Impacted During Short Window

The draining activity affected Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Solana, and other EVM compatible networks. Just recently, Trust Wallet Token jumped 40% after CZ praised the token’s expanding utility. Each affected wallet showed immediate full balance transfers. No gradual testing transactions appeared beforehand. This behavior reduced the likelihood of user error.

The affected users shared one common factor. Each had installed or updated the Chrome extension shortly before the loss. Mobile only users reported no similar incidents. Other extension versions also showed no abnormal activity. Consequently, investigators narrowed the scope to version 2.68.

Trust Wallet Response and Ongoing Review

Trust Wallet later confirmed a security incident involving the browser extension version 2.68. The company advised users to disable that version and upgrade to version 2.69. The firm stated that mobile applications remained unaffected. Customer support teams began contacting impacted users directly.

As of press time, Trust Wallet had not confirmed the root cause. The company had not linked the update itself as the exploit source. The investigation focused on seed phrase handling during imports. The timeline remains defined by transaction data following the December update.
