The competition among web browsers is intensifying once more, this time with artificial intelligence taking the lead.

OpenAI has just introduced Atlas, a browser powered by ChatGPT that enables users to navigate the internet using everyday language. It also features an “agent mode” capable of carrying out tasks on its own. This marks one of the most significant browser launches in recent years, but it arrives with a yet-to-be-fixed security issue that could put passwords, emails, and private information at risk.

On the Equity podcast from TechCrunch, Max Zeff, Anthony Ha, and Sean O’Kane discuss the launch of Atlas, the surge of new browser alternatives, and other notable startup and technology stories from the week.

Tune in to the complete episode for discussions on:

  • How Rivian’s spin-off, Also, secured a huge contract with Amazon for thousands of pedal-assisted cargo bikes (and why its name is so awkward to mention in conversation)
  • The story behind Sesame, a conversational AI company founded by the creators of Oculus, raising $250 million for a product that hasn’t actually launched yet
  • The AWS outage that disrupted large parts of the internet, caused major issues for Eight Sleep mattresses, and highlighted the web’s vulnerability
  • Alternative browsers that are either embracing or resisting the AI trend, including privacy-centric choices like DuckDuckGo and Brave, as well as “mindful” browsers such as Opera Air
