On Wednesday, Amazon revealed that it is working on AI-enabled smart glasses designed specifically for its delivery drivers. These glasses aim to offer a hands-free solution, minimizing the need for drivers to constantly switch their attention between their phone, the package, and their environment.

According to the e-commerce leader, the smart glasses will let drivers scan packages, receive step-by-step walking directions, and document proof of delivery—all without needing to use their phones. The device leverages artificial intelligence and computer vision, using built-in cameras to project information such as potential hazards and delivery instructions directly onto the display.

Amazon appears to be aiming for faster deliveries by equipping drivers with real-time directions and hazard alerts right in their field of vision, potentially reducing the time spent on each drop-off.

Once a driver arrives and parks at a delivery site, the glasses automatically turn on. They assist the driver in finding the correct package inside the vehicle and then guide them to the recipient’s address. The device is especially helpful in complex locations like multi-unit buildings or business centers, offering straightforward navigation.

The glasses are connected to a controller that is worn in the delivery vest, which houses the main controls, a replaceable battery, and an emergency button for safety.

Amazon also highlights that the glasses are compatible with prescription lenses and feature adaptive lenses that change with lighting conditions.

Currently, Amazon is piloting these smart glasses with delivery personnel in North America and intends to further enhance the technology before making it widely available.

This development was anticipated, as Reuters had previously reported last year that Amazon was developing such smart glasses.

Looking ahead, Amazon states that the glasses will eventually offer “real-time defect detection,” alerting drivers if a package is mistakenly delivered to the wrong location. They will also be able to identify animals in yards and automatically adapt to challenges like poor lighting.

In addition, Amazon introduced a new robotic arm called “Blue Jay” on Wednesday, which is designed to assist warehouse workers by picking items from shelves and sorting them. The company also announced Eluna, a new AI-powered tool intended to deliver operational insights within Amazon’s warehouses.
