Recent statistics reveal a notable surge in the number of people using Meta AI’s mobile application on both iOS and Android. Market research firm Similarweb reports that daily active users for the app climbed to 2.7 million by October 17, a substantial rise from approximately 775,000 just a month earlier. Additionally, the app’s daily downloads have increased, now reaching 300,000 per day, compared to fewer than 200,000 daily installs several weeks prior.

To put this in perspective, on October 17, 2024, Meta AI’s app was only being downloaded 4,000 times per day.

The company notes that it hasn’t identified any significant trends in search or advertising data, but points out that Meta might be promoting the app through Facebook or Instagram, which wouldn’t be reflected in their analysis.

There may be another factor behind this rapid growth: the introduction of Meta’s Vibes feed in September, which brought short-form AI-generated videos to the Meta AI app.

Meta AI rolled out the Vibes feed on September 25, which lines up with the noticeable jump in daily active users on both iOS and Android, as illustrated in the following chart.

Not long ago, OpenAI’s Sora video generator made headlines after its app soared to the top of the App Store, attracting users eager to try out the latest technology. Meta AI may have gained from this event as well. Although Similarweb’s data doesn’t confirm a direct link, it’s plausible that the buzz around Sora encouraged some users to check out Meta AI for comparison.

It’s also possible that Meta is seeing gains because Sora is only available by invitation. Users unable to access OpenAI’s app may have sought out Meta AI as an alternative, suggesting that OpenAI’s restricted access to Sora may have inadvertently helped its competitors.

By October 17, Meta AI’s app experienced a 15.58% global increase in daily active users, while ChatGPT, Grok, and Perplexity each saw decreases of 3.51%, 7.35%, and 2.29%, respectively.
