Facebook changes its algorithm, allowing users greater authority over the videos that appear for them

Facebook changes its algorithm, allowing users greater authority over the videos that appear for them

On Tuesday, Meta revealed a fresh update to Facebook’s algorithm that will highlight more Reels videos customized to individual user interests. This update introduces options for users to better manage the videos they encounter, AI-driven search recommendations, and introduces new friend bubbles.

Facebook is simplifying the process for users to indicate when they are not interested in certain videos. Now, users can choose “Not Interested” on a Reel or report a comment, allowing the recommendation system to adjust accordingly.

The “Save” function has also been improved, making it more convenient to organize preferred Reels and posts together.

These updates are intended to tackle user complaints about unwanted content. Numerous users have voiced annoyance over reels that are misleading, bothersome, or packed with poor-quality AI-generated clips. Meta has put significant resources into AI, recently introducing a short-form video stream called “Vibes,” which exclusively features AI-created content within the Meta AI app.

The algorithm changes are also designed to emphasize the latest uploads. Meta says users will now see 50% more Reels that were posted on the same day they are browsing.

AI-powered search suggestions are also coming to Facebook Reels. These prompts will offer users ideas for searches to help them find more videos on topics they enjoy, much like the gray suggestions that appear beneath TikTok videos.

Furthermore, new friend bubbles will appear on Reels and in the main feed, letting users see which posts their friends have liked—mirroring a feature on Instagram. By tapping a friend’s profile bubble, users can start a private chat with them.
