About Ripple USD (RLUSD)

What Is Ripple USD (RLUSD)?

Ripple USD (RLUSD) is a United States dollar–pegged stablecoin created by Ripple, the company best known for developing the XRP Ledger and the digital asset XRP. Launched in December 2024, each RLUSD token maintains a fixed value of one U.S. dollar, backed by an equivalent amount of cash or cash-equivalent reserves such as short-term U.S. Treasuries. This structure aims to provide stability for transactions, trading, and payments, reducing the volatility common in many cryptocurrencies.

The stablecoin is issued by Standard Custody & Trust Company, LLC (SCTC), a Ripple subsidiary regulated by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS). This regulatory oversight includes strict compliance with Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti-Money Laundering (AML) standards, placing RLUSD in the category of regulated digital assets. Ripple launched RLUSD in late 2024 as part of its effort to expand its role in cross-border payments and digital finance.

Available on both the XRP Ledger (XRPL) and the Ethereum blockchain, RLUSD offers interoperability between two widely used blockchain ecosystems. On XRPL, RLUSD benefits from fast settlement and low transaction fees, while on Ethereum it functions as an ERC-20 token, allowing integration with a broad range of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications.

How Ripple USD Works

RLUSD operates as a fiat-backed stablecoin with a 1:1 reserve model. For every RLUSD token issued, an equivalent value in U.S. dollars or approved low-risk assets is held in segregated reserves at U.S.-based financial institutions. Independent certified public accountants conduct monthly attestations to verify the accuracy of these reserves. Public reports provide transparency on circulating supply, reserves, and token issuance or redemption.

On the XRP Ledger, RLUSD is implemented as an issued currency, enabling rapid and inexpensive transactions suitable for cross-border payments, remittances, and institutional settlements. On Ethereum, RLUSD follows the ERC-20 token standard, making it compatible with decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, and other smart contract–based services. This multi-chain approach gives users flexibility in choosing their preferred environment for storage, transfers, and integration.

RLUSD can be held in both custodial and non-custodial crypto wallets. Custodial wallets are managed by a third party, offering account recovery options and customer support but with less privacy. Non-custodial wallets give users full control over their private keys, increasing privacy and independence but requiring greater responsibility for security. The stablecoin is supported by a growing list of centralized exchanges, decentralized exchanges, and on/off-ramp providers.

Is Ripple USD Safe?

Several factors contribute to RLUSD’s security and reliability. First, SCTC’s NYDFS charter requires compliance with established U.S. financial regulations, offering a legal framework for operations. Second, the backing reserves consist of cash and high-quality liquid assets held at reputable institutions, with regular third-party attestations providing public proof of coverage. This reduces the risk of under-collateralization.

In addition, RLUSD smart contracts on Ethereum undergo independent audits to ensure they meet industry security standards. Ripple also maintains certifications such as SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, along with an active Threat and Vulnerability Management program. Users, however, must still follow best practices for digital asset storage. The safety of RLUSD in practice depends not only on its reserve model and compliance measures but also on the wallet security and operational practices of the holder.

Conclusion

Ripple USD (RLUSD) combines the stability of a fiat-backed digital currency with the versatility of blockchain technology. Its dual presence on the XRP Ledger and Ethereum allows for both fast, low-cost settlements and broad DeFi integration. With regulated issuance, transparent reserve reporting, and multi-chain support, RLUSD is designed to serve individuals, businesses, and institutions seeking a reliable digital asset for payments, trading, and settlement. As with all cryptocurrencies, prospective users should evaluate both the benefits and the operational considerations before holding or transacting with RLUSD.

Very Important Message to the XRP Community
The XRP ecosystem is once again navigating a moment where influence, interpretation, and technical accuracy collide. As XRP’s role in global payments, liquidity provisioning, and institutional blockchain infrastructure continues to expand, community discussions have grown more complex—and, at times, more contentious. In such an environment, clarity matters just as much as conviction, especially when widely shared content begins shaping market perception. Against this backdrop, Jesse of Apex Crypto Insights issued a public message addressing rising concerns sparked by a recently circulated video discussing XRP flows, utility, and ledger architecture. While reaffirming his respect for long-standing contributors within the community, Jesse made it clear that certain claims now gaining traction do not align with verified, current realities surrounding the XRP Ledger and Ripple’s enterprise ecosystem. 🚨 VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE TO THE XRP COMMUNITY 🚨 Dear XRP Community,Regarding the recent video and post by Lewis Jackson on XRP's flow, utility, private ledgers, shared ledgers, and related topics, I want to address this directly. I have genuine respect for Lewis Jackson and… — Apex Crypto Insights (NFA) (@APEXCONSULTNFA) December 24, 2025 Context Behind the Controversy The discussion centers on interpretations of how XRP interacts with private ledgers, shared ledgers, and institutional systems. According to Jesse, several technical conclusions presented in the video are fundamentally flawed. He noted that within the first portion alone, multiple inaccuracies stood out—enough to warrant a direct response due to the confusion they were causing among XRP holders. This concern is not abstract. Jesse revealed that numerous community members reached out privately seeking reassurance and technical clarification, underscoring how quickly uncertainty can spread when complex infrastructure topics are oversimplified or mischaracterized. The XRPL Architecture and Utility Publicly documented information from Ripple and XRPL developers confirms that the XRP Ledger is a public, decentralized blockchain. Private ledgers used by financial institutions are separate systems designed for regulatory compliance and operational privacy. Interaction between these environments occurs through structured interoperability frameworks, not through undocumented or speculative XRP “flow” mechanisms. We are on X, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1 — TimesTabloid (@TimesTabloid1) June 15, 2025 Misrepresenting this distinction can distort expectations around liquidity movement, token utility, and institutional adoption—particularly at a time when Ripple’s infrastructure strategy includes regulated products such as RLUSD, which launched in December 2024 and is now fully operational. Addressing Misinformation and Platform Friction Jesse also disclosed that an earlier post outlining his concerns and promising detailed follow-ups was removed from the platform, prompting the release of a more direct public statement. Despite this setback, he stressed that there is no cause for alarm and advised the community to disregard the disputed claims until a full technical breakdown is presented. What Comes Next for the XRP Community To ensure transparency and accuracy, Jesse confirmed that a series of fact-based response videos will be released within the next four to eight days. Each will address specific errors using verifiable data and established XRPL documentation. For now, his message is one of reassurance: informed analysis, not reactionary fear, remains essential as XRP continues its evolution within global finance. XRPL Validator Explains Lending Protocol on XRP
As decentralized finance continues to mature, the focus is gradually shifting away from speculative yield toward structurally sound financial models that can survive market stress. On the XRP Ledger (XRPL), this challenge is even more pronounced. Designed for speed, determinism, and large-scale value transfer, XRPL was never built to mirror Ethereum-style DeFi. Instead, lending on XRPL is evolving along a more disciplined, risk-aware path—one that aligns closely with traditional financial principles. That framework was recently clarified by Vet, a respected XRPL validator and long-standing ecosystem contributor, who outlined how a lending protocol can function on XRP without compromising depositor safety or ledger integrity. His explanation offers a rare look into how yield generation on XRPL can be both sustainable and accountable. Vault-Based Deposits and Asset Structure The protocol begins with depositors placing XRP or XRPL-issued IOUs—such as Ripple’s RLUSD—into a vault. These assets remain transparently accounted for on the ledger, leveraging XRPL’s native support for trustlines and issued currencies. Lending Protocol on XRP 1. Depositor put XRP or IOU like RLUSD into a vault. 2. Loan Broker gives out one or multiple XRP loans out to Borrowers 3. Borrowers pay interest to Loan Broker 4. Loan Broker puts collected interest into vault 5. Vault value increases - Depositors… pic.twitter.com/DfYN4TObgx — Vet (@Vet_X0) December 23, 2025 Rather than interacting directly with borrowers, depositors gain exposure to yield through the collective vault, simplifying risk distribution and asset management. The Loan Broker as Intermediary A central feature of the design is the Loan Broker. This entity draws liquidity from the vault and issues one or multiple XRP-denominated loans to borrowers. Borrowers repay these loans over time with interest, which is collected by the broker. Crucially, the interest is not retained as profit alone; it is routed back into the vault, steadily increasing its value and generating yield for depositors. This intermediary-based structure mirrors conventional credit markets more closely than peer-to-peer DeFi, prioritizing credit assessment, borrower selection, and capital discipline. We are on X, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1 — TimesTabloid (@TimesTabloid1) June 15, 2025 Buffer Mechanism and Default Protection What truly distinguishes this model is how it handles default risk. Vet emphasized that the Loan Broker must provide a buffer—its own capital locked specifically to absorb losses. If a borrower defaults, losses are covered by this buffer first, shielding depositors from immediate harm. Only if defaults exceed the buffer would depositor funds be affected. This requirement forces the broker to maintain “skin in the game,” aligning incentives and discouraging reckless lending. It also addresses one of DeFi’s most persistent weaknesses: risk being socialized while profits remain private. Why This Model Fits XRPL’s Design Philosophy The lending structure Vet described works within XRPL’s architectural constraints rather than against them. It avoids complex on-ledger smart contracts, preserves XRPL’s performance guarantees, and leverages its strengths in settlement, transparency, and asset issuance. As the XRPL ecosystem expands—driven by stablecoins like RLUSD and broader institutional adoption—this approach demonstrates that DeFi on XRP is evolving with intention. Rather than chasing experimental yield, it is building financial infrastructure designed to last. Disclaimer: This content is meant to inform and should not be considered financial advice. XRP Just Got Handed a Compliance Cheat Code. Here’s the Latest
A section of the U.S. tax policy draft has caught the attention of the pseudonymous Financial expert X Finance Bull, who believes it could mark an important step toward mainstream adoption of blockchain-based payments. The image of the document captioned in the post outlines the proposed treatment for small digital asset transactions. While technical in nature, X Finance Bull argues that its implications could reshape how regulated stablecoins and XRP fit into the evolving financial system. BOOM!🚨🚨🚨 $XRP just got handed a compliance cheat code U.S. tax draft removes capital gains under $200 for regulated stablecoins, perfect setup for $RLUSD as spendable cash With Ripple rails beneath it and XRP as bridge asset, this puts TradFi directly on crypto rails LFG! https://t.co/jDTUJot5RX pic.twitter.com/LPQJfnQrua — X Finance Bull (@Xfinancebull) December 21, 2025 The $200 Threshold for Stablecoin Transactions According to the draft language cited in the images, policymakers are considering a per-transaction de minimis threshold of $200 for regulated payment stablecoins. Under this framework, capital gains below that amount would not be recognized for tax purposes. The intent, as described in the explanatory note, is to eliminate the burden of tracking low-value gains arising from routine consumer payments, similar to existing treatment for small foreign currency transactions. X Finance Bull presents this as a practical compliance pathway that could remove one of the biggest obstacles to everyday crypto usage in the United States. He stresses that by simplifying tax treatment for small purchases, regulators would make it more feasible for stablecoins to function as true payment instruments rather than purely speculative assets. RLUSD and Ripple’s Payment Rails Building on this policy direction, X Finance Bull connects the proposal to RLUSD, Ripple’s regulated stablecoin. He argues that a framework designed specifically for compliant payment stablecoins creates an ideal environment for RLUSD to operate as a digital cash equivalent. In his view, this would allow consumers and institutions to transact on-chain while remaining within established regulatory boundaries. He further points to Ripple’s payment infrastructure as the foundation that could support this model. By providing the rails for settlement and liquidity, Ripple’s network, he suggests, enables traditional financial institutions to access blockchain technology without abandoning the structures they already rely on. XRP’s Role as a Bridge Asset Within this setup, X Finance Bull highlights XRP as the bridge asset that connects liquidity between different currencies and networks. Rather than focusing on market price, he emphasizes utility, arguing that XRP’s purpose in facilitating efficient transfers becomes more relevant as regulated stablecoins move across compliant rails. From his perspective, this positions XRP as a functional link between traditional finance and digital asset ecosystems. We are on X, follow us to connect with us :- @TimesTabloid1 — TimesTabloid (@TimesTabloid1) June 15, 2025 Toward TradFi on Crypto Infrastructure The draft also references future regulations and guidance, including anti-abuse rules, recordkeeping standards, and treatment of mixed transactions. X Finance Bull interprets this as evidence that U.S. policymakers are laying the groundwork for a structured, long-term framework for digital payments. While acknowledging that the language remains under technical review, X Finance Bull frames the proposal as a signal that traditional finance may soon operate more directly on crypto infrastructure. Ripple Exec Makes Massive 2026 Prediction
Ripple executive Reece Merrick has predicted that institutional adoption is going to accelerate at a rapid pace in 2026. "By end of 2026, this number will increase and every significant bank, asset manager, and payment network will have meaningful exposure," he said. Merrick is arguing that crypto is no longer an optional asset class, meaning that institutional investors have to embrace it in order to remain competitive. Traditional finance (TradFi) banks that do not offer crypto services will lose clients to those that do. If a customer cannot hold Bitcoin or stablecoins in their JP Morgan or Chase account, they will move their capital to a fintech competitor (like Coinbase or Revolut). "It’s no longer 'if.' It’s 'how fast' ... The train left the station," he said. For instance, banks were paralyzed because they didn't know if stablecoins would be classified as illegal securities. The GENIUS Act officially classified compliant stablecoins, including RLUSD, as permitted payment infrastructure. Banks like JPMorgan and Standard Chartered began integrating stablecoin rails directly into their backend. Asset managers also realized that tokenized Treasury bills of the likes of BlackRock's BUIDL could be used as collateral for trading on a round-the-clock basis. Ripple's great 2025 2025 is quite significant for Ripple since it finally put the years-long battle with the SEC to rest. "What stayed with me most was watching the entire global team rally with unbreakable focus and determination. Seeing that unity and refusal to be distracted, along with the facts, made me absolutely positive we would win, no question!" Merrick recalled on the fifth anniversary of the groundbreaking lawsuit. Ripple has effectively spent the last 12 months transforming from a payments company into a full-stack institutional infrastructure provider. This newfound regulatory clarity allowed the San Francisco-headquartered company to aggressively deploy its massive funds for strategic acquisitions of the likes of Hidden Road and GTreasury. RLUSD also became part of institutional payment flows, with its market cap surpassing $1 billion. Institutional clients are now minting millions in TBILL tokens on the XRP Ledger via OpenEden. A hedge fund can now hold its idle cash in Tokenized T-Bills on the XRP Ledger and earn a yield of up to 5%.
