Trump eases pressure on Powell, China tariffs; S&P 500, Dow, Nasdaq rise sharply
- Dow Jones, Nasdaq rise after Trump speech
- Market reacts well to possible tariff reduction
- Tesla appreciates despite lower-than-expected profits
Major U.S. stock futures indexes rose sharply on Wednesday, boosted by statements from former President Donald Trump that eased concerns about monetary policy and trade tensions.
In a recent speech, Trump said he “never had” any intention of firing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, despite previous criticism. “I would like to see him be a little more active in his idea of lowering interest rates,” he said. The softer tone reassured investors about the monetary authority’s independence, which contributed to the recovery of markets.
Dow Jones futures rose about 1,7%, or nearly 700 points. The S&P 500 rose 2,3%, while Nasdaq futures gained 2,8%, led by technology. The improvement was seen as a relief after recent declines triggered by political and trade uncertainty.
In the same vein, Trump also indicated a willingness to review tariffs on China, classifying the current levels as capable of being “substantially reduced.” The statements coincided with statements by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who described the tariffs as “unsustainable.” Vice President JD Vance signaled progress in trade negotiations with India.
Tesla shares also stood out in the trading session. Even after reporting quarterly results below expectations, the company's shares rose. The movement was attributed to a comment by CEO Elon Musk, who said he will dedicate “significantly” less time to the cryptocurrency DOGE, suggesting a greater focus on the automaker's operations.
The combination of easing political tensions and corporate data helped restore some investor confidence, with Wall Street bracing for possible rate cuts and progress on trade deals.
