Musk recruits for Government Efficiency unit, explores 501(c)(3) structure
insiders revealed that Elon Musk is recruiting employees for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), with Boring Co. President Steve Davis and former US Chief Technology Officer Michael Kratsios, both under Musk's leadership, among the main potential candidates. DOGE has currently hired about 10 people and is seeking software engineers, including those with experience in artificial intelligence.
Currently, DOGE operates in a glass-walled office in Washington, which is leased by Musk's other company, SpaceX, and is about four blocks from the White House.
Some insiders revealed that Musk and Ramaswamy (another leader) are still working to determine the structure of DOGE, but they are considering incorporating it into a 501(c)(3). One complication is that 501(c)(3) can be both a public charity (meaning it must pass a public support test and at least one-third of donations come from a broad base of supporters) and a private foundation, with stricter restrictions on private foundations.
