Google Introduces Managed MCP Servers to Streamline AI Agent Integration

AI agents are increasingly promoted as versatile tools for tasks such as travel planning, business intelligence, and problem-solving. However, enabling these agents to interact with external tools and data sources beyond their chat environments has proven challenging. Developers often need to assemble and maintain a patchwork of connectors, a process that is both fragile and difficult to scale, while also complicating governance.

To address these issues, Google has unveiled its own fully managed, remote MCP servers. These servers are designed to simplify the integration of Google and Google Cloud services—including Maps and BigQuery—into AI agents’ workflows.

This initiative comes on the heels of the release of Google’s latest Gemini 3 model. The company aims to combine enhanced reasoning capabilities with more reliable access to real-world data and tools.

“We are making Google agent-ready by design,” explained Steren Giannini, Director of Product Management at Google Cloud, in an interview with TechCrunch.

According to Giannini, developers can now connect to these managed endpoints simply by providing a URL, eliminating the need for weeks of manual connector setup.

At launch, Google’s MCP servers will support Maps, BigQuery, Compute Engine, and Kubernetes Engine. For example, an analytics assistant could directly query BigQuery, or an operations agent could interact with infrastructure services.

When it comes to Maps, Giannini noted that, without MCP, agents would rely solely on their internal knowledge. By leveraging the Google Maps MCP server, agents gain access to current, accurate location data for tasks like trip planning.

Initially, these MCP servers are available in a public preview phase, meaning they are not yet fully governed by Google Cloud’s standard terms of service. However, enterprise customers who already subscribe to Google services can access them at no additional cost.

Giannini anticipates that these servers will reach general availability soon, with additional MCP servers expected to be introduced regularly.

Understanding MCP and Its Industry Impact

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) was created by Anthropic about a year ago as an open-source standard to link AI systems with external tools and data. MCP has quickly gained traction across the AI agent ecosystem. Recently, Anthropic contributed MCP to a new Linux Foundation initiative focused on open-sourcing and standardizing AI agent infrastructure.

“The beauty of MCP is that, as a standard, any client can connect to a server provided by Google,” Giannini remarked. “I’m eager to see the variety of clients that will emerge.”

MCP clients function as AI applications that communicate with MCP servers to access the tools they provide. Google’s own Gemini CLI and AI Studio are among these clients. Giannini has also successfully tested MCP with Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT, noting seamless compatibility.

Enterprise Integration and Security

Google emphasizes that this development goes beyond simply linking agents to its services. The broader enterprise strategy involves Apigee, Google’s API management platform, which many organizations already use for issuing API keys, managing quotas, and monitoring usage.

Giannini explained that Apigee can convert a standard API into an MCP server, allowing endpoints like a product catalog API to become discoverable and usable tools for AI agents, all while maintaining existing security and governance protocols.

This means that the same security measures companies use for traditional applications can now be extended to AI agents.

Google’s new MCP servers are safeguarded by Google Cloud IAM, which precisely controls agent permissions, and by Google Cloud Model Armor, a specialized firewall that protects against sophisticated threats such as prompt injection and data leaks. Administrators also benefit from audit logging for enhanced oversight.

Future Expansion

Google plans to broaden MCP support to include additional services in the coming months, covering areas such as storage, databases, logging, monitoring, and security.

“We’ve built the infrastructure so developers don’t have to,” Giannini concluded.
