  • Tether integrates USDT on RGB protocol
  • Enables native stablecoin use on Bitcoin
  • Boosts BTC’s utility for smart contracts

Tether, the company behind the world’s most widely used stablecoin USDT, has announced a major move: USDT will now be available on the RGB protocol, a smart contract layer built on top of Bitcoin . This marks the first time Bitcoin will support native stablecoin functionality at scale, unlocking new potential for BTC holders and developers.

RGB is a scalable, privacy-focused smart contract system designed to run over Bitcoin and Lightning Network. With Tether launching USDT on this protocol, users can now transact with stablecoins on Bitcoin in a more private and efficient way, without needing to rely on external chains like Ethereum or Tron.

A New Era for Bitcoin Utility

For years, Bitcoin has been criticized for its lack of programmability and smart contract features compared to Ethereum. RGB changes that by enabling advanced financial contracts and token issuance directly over Bitcoin’s infrastructure. By launching USDT on RGB, Tether is not only extending stablecoin support to Bitcoin but also tapping into the network’s security and decentralization.

This could pave the way for more DeFi applications and asset tokenization over Bitcoin, especially with USDT already holding a dominant position in global crypto trading.

Privacy and Scalability at the Core

One of RGB’s standout features is its commitment to privacy. It uses client-side validation and avoids storing data directly on the Bitcoin blockchain , ensuring transactions remain confidential and lightweight. With Tether leveraging this system, USDT transactions on Bitcoin will benefit from lower fees and improved privacy—something many users have long demanded.

This move also positions Bitcoin as more than just a store of value. It’s a step toward making BTC part of a broader, more functional financial ecosystem.
