According to a report by Jinse Finance, citing NBC News, five sources familiar with the matter, including two European officials, revealed that during a call with European leaders on Wednesday local time, U.S. President Trump made it clear that the core objective of his upcoming meeting with Russian President Putin is to facilitate a ceasefire in Ukraine, rather than to discuss territorial divisions. European officials present and two other sources stated that all parties reached a consensus that peace talks can only begin after a ceasefire is achieved. Some European leaders sensed from the call that Trump has cautious expectations regarding the outcome of the meeting. However, all five sources emphasized that all leaders agreed on two core principles: Ukraine must be fully involved in the negotiations, and any decisions regarding territorial concessions must be made solely by Ukraine. They also revealed that allies are united in the view that if Putin refuses a ceasefire, Trump may introduce new sanctions against Russia.
