Rivian to Debut In-House AI Assistant in 2026

After two years of development, Rivian is set to introduce its proprietary AI assistant in early 2026. This innovative feature will be available not only in the upcoming versions of the R1T pickup and R1S SUV, but also as an update for all existing electric vehicles in the Rivian lineup.

Both drivers and passengers will be able to interact with the AI assistant to manage climate settings and perform various functions within the vehicle’s infotainment system. The assistant will also bridge vehicle systems with third-party applications through a specialized agentic framework engineered by Rivian. The first external app to be integrated will be Google Calendar, according to Rivian’s announcement on Thursday.

“The advantage here is our ability to seamlessly incorporate third-party agents, fundamentally changing how future apps will work within our vehicles,” explained Wassym Bensaid, Rivian’s head of software development, during the company’s AI & Autonomy event in Palo Alto, California.

Rivian plans to enhance the assistant with advanced large language models, such as Google Vertex AI and Gemini, to enable more natural conversations, robust reasoning, and reliable data handling.

Commitment to Vertical Integration

This AI assistant initiative, first reported by TechCrunch, is part of CEO RJ Scaringe’s broader strategy to deepen Rivian’s vertical integration. The company showcased this commitment at its recent event in Palo Alto, where it also unveiled new software and hardware advancements. Among these is a custom 5nm processor developed in partnership with Arm and TSMC, designed to enhance Rivian’s hands-free driving features and eventually enable eyes-off-the-road capabilities.

Rivian has been pursuing this integrated approach for several years. In 2024, the automaker overhauled the core systems of its flagship R1T and R1S models, updating everything from battery packs and suspension to electrical systems, sensors, and user interfaces.

Building a Flexible Software Platform

Led by Bensaid, Rivian’s software division continues to expand its technology stack. A dedicated, undisclosed team has focused on creating the AI assistant to be adaptable across different models and platforms.

To support the assistant, Rivian has developed a model- and platform-independent architecture called Rivian Unified Intelligence (RUI). This hybrid system combines proprietary large language models with an orchestration layer that coordinates the various AI components. For certain agentic AI features, Rivian also leverages technology from external partners.

“Rivian Unified Intelligence acts as the central nervous system of our digital ecosystem,” Bensaid stated at the event. “This platform empowers specialized agent solutions that add value throughout our operations and across the entire vehicle lifecycle.”

Beyond powering the AI assistant, RUI will also enhance vehicle diagnostics. Rivian describes this as providing technicians with an expert assistant capable of analyzing telemetry and historical data to quickly identify complex problems.

This article has been updated to clarify that the AI assistant will be enhanced by advanced large language models.
