According to The Wall Street Journal, Ford’s leadership is contemplating discontinuing its flagship electric pickup, the F-150 Lightning.

These conversations follow Ford’s decision in late October to halt F-150 Lightning manufacturing, shifting its focus to hybrid and gasoline-powered models of the well-known pickup. The automaker has faced production setbacks, particularly after a fire earlier this year at the Novelis aluminum plant in Oswego, New York, which supplies key materials.

Ford launched the F-150 Lightning in 2021, initially advertising a starting price of $40,000. Production and sales began in 2022, though most buyers ultimately paid significantly more than the base price.

Despite ranking among the best-selling electric pickups in the country, Ford has only managed to move a few thousand units each quarter. The electric truck market was already challenging before Congressional Republicans eliminated the federal EV tax incentive and the Trump administration rolled back emissions standards that had promoted electric vehicle adoption.
